Portage celebrates its 41st anniversary!

Portage lac ÉchoFebruary 14, 2014 marked the 41st anniversary since the first Portage centre in Prévost opened its doors to its first group of residents, who were looking to overcome their addiction issues and take back control of their lives. Since then, Portage’s rehabilitation services have expanded to respond to the needs of people with substance abuse issues across Québec, in Atlantic Canada, Ontario, and British Columbia.

The MICA Program’s new structure is helping more people seek the help they need

 In February 2012, Portage’s Mentally Ill Chemical Abusers (MICA) Program underwent a restructuring, with the aim to eliminate the waiting list, facilitate the orientation process, and increase the program’s efficiency. Now, two years later, the value of the new structure is apparent. Residents are able to complete the different phases of their residential program more quickly and as a result, more clients are being treated at the MICA Program on a yearly basis.

Valin Confection’s moving advertising campaign helps Portage clients succeed

Portage Québec ValinValin Confection, a Québec City designer, invited a few Portage-Québec clients into their shop and tailor-made each of them a new suit, so that they could feel confident and make a good impression at their upcoming job interviews. Portage’s centre in Québec City provides an external drug addiction rehabilitation program for adults, as well as an employment training program. Clients often participate in both programs one after the other, in order to prepare themselves to return to the workforce and once again become active members of society.

The Day Centre for the Adult Program has opened its doors once again in Montréal

National Addictions Awareness Week

During National Addictions Awareness Week, which took place from November 18 to 24, 2013, Portage created awareness about the co-occurrence of mental health problems and substance abuse.  According to the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health, 30 percent of people with a mental illness will develop a substance abuse problem in their lifetime and 53 percent of people who abuse drugs will develop a mental illness.
