Portage to join the Ontario Telemedicine Network

Portage Ontario is among the addiction agencies recently selected to receive new telemedicine equipment and support to link into the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN).  This is part of the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care’s initiative to address narcotics abuse and to make specialised addiction and mental health services more accessible to people who live in rural and remote communities.  Through the OTN, specialists can conduct appointments with clients via a secure video link, as opposed to face-to-face, thus reducing the need for travel.

Portage Elora Social Reintegration StaffWhether in Guelph, Port Elgin, Ottawa, Kitchener, Toronto, or anywhere else in Ontario, Christy Kolb travels on a weekly basis to meet with the youth who are in Portage Elora’s Continuing Care Program. As a reintegration counsellor, Christy supports graduates of the residential drug rehabilitation program for an eighteen month period, as they transition back into mainstream society.  This is one of the most challenging and fragile periods in the rehabilitation process, as new values, behaviours, and attitudes get put to the test in an outside environment.
