Official opening of Portage Atlantic’s scenic and therapeutic Recovery Trail

Portage Atlantic Recovery Trail signAfter over three years of planning, developing, and fundraising, Portage Atlantic was proud to host board members and donors to the official opening of the Recovery Trail on November 8, 2013. The guests walked a small portion of the 3.8 km trail to the new cabin in the woods for a small ceremony, where residents explained how much it means to them to have a quiet and safe place on site where they can get some fresh air and exercise.

Cassidy Lake residents celebrate the Holidays with the help of the Lions Club

Portage Atlantic Lions PartyOn December 8, 2013, Portage Atlantic youth, staff members, and Lions Club members gathered at Cassidy Lake for the Annual Lions Christmas Party. The tone of the event was one of happiness and cheer and it was clear that the residents were extremely grateful for the generous gifts, as well as the presence and support of the Lions Club members.

Portage Atlantic highlights the importance of collaboration between mental health and addiction programs and services

During National Addictions Awareness Week, which ran from November 18 to 24, Portage Atlantic created awareness about the important link between its addiction rehabilitation program for youth and the local mental health and addiction support services with whom it works. According to the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health, 30% of people with a mental illness will develop a substance abuse problem in their lifetime and 53% of people who abuse drugs will develop a mental illness.

Portage Atlantic’s first online fundraiser rallies donors around the dreams of youth

Portage Atlantic fundraiserPortage Atlantic’s first online fundraising initiative raised a total of $11,222 thanks to the generosity of online donors. The campaign, which culminated in National Addiction Awareness Week at the end of November 2013, sought to spread awareness to a larger audience through a new medium, and showcase Portage as a leader in addiction treatment in Atlantic Canada.
