Portage Atlantic takes its Community Breakfast series to Corner Brook, Newfoundland

On May 15, forty guests attended a Portage Atlantic Community Breakfast in Corner Brook, Newfoundland.  Portage Atlantic has received youth from Corner Brook in the past, and this community gathering was a means to reconnect with the community and increase awareness in Newfoundland and Labrador about the Portage program being offered in New Brunswick.

Portage Atlantic Recognition Ceremony
The annual Portage Atlantic Recognition Ceremony recognises the youth who have completed their residential therapy in the past year and celebrates the graduates who have maintained a positive lifestyle for a full year.  This year’s celebration will take place on Sunday, September 30 and will feature a special guest speaker, and former Cassidy Lake resident, Dan Martell.

The Friars Family dedicating a concert to Portage Atlantic
The Saint John’s singing Friars Family will be performing a musical concert in November 2012 to raise money for Portage Atlantic. Some members of the group visited Cassidy Lake on May 10 to meet the residents, take part in a morning meeting, and tour the facility.

Summer is finally here and the school holiday schedule is in full swing with lots of fun activities for the male and the female communities at the Cassidy Lake substance abuse rehabilitation centre for youth.

Residents share their experiences on Anti-Bullying Day  

Many Portage residents have either been a bully or been the victim of bullying in the past, experiences which, in many cases, have contributed to their substance abuse issues. On June 15, Portage Atlantic dedicated the day to talking about bullying and learning how to prevent it and better deal with situations where someone is being the victim of bullying.  They watched a few movies on this theme, including the video that was filmed at Cassidy Lake last year by a group of former residents.  Click here to view the video…

Cassidy Lake staff members get certified in suicide prevention  

Portage Atlantic - Staff ASIST trainingAt the end of June, the entire staff at Cassidy Lake participated in the ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) Program. The Suicide Intervention Model, produced by a private company called LivingWorks, is described as “Suicide First-Aid” and is designed to keep a person safe until they are able to be connected with professional help.

Portage Atlantic - Lions bursary Amanda2Amanda, a Portage Atlantic graduate and fourth year psychology student at Saint Thomas University, was recently awarded a $1,000 bursary from the Ron Evans Bursary Fund for post-secondary studies.

Portage graduate presents moving testimonial to Delta Kappa Gamma women teachers group

The Delta Kappa Gamma women teachers group invited a Portage Atlantic representative and program graduate to speak about the Portage program at their Spring Conference in Fredericton on June 2. The DKG members were visibly moved by the graduate’s story as she shared her deepest moments of pain as a young mother of two battling a severe, life-shattering addiction to drugs.

Riverview Lions donate $2,000
Members of the Riverview Lions Club were on site at Cassidy Lake on June 27 to present a cheque for $2,000 to Portage Atlantic, which was used to purchase Judo mats and art supplies at the centre.
