It’s hard to express in a few words the impact Portage has had on myself and my loved ones. Portage Atlantic has been part of my life in one way or the other for 26 of the 30 years since it began at Cassidy Lake — the relationship continues to this very day.

In a world of so many challenges, Portage exemplifies hope, goodness, and a genuine compassion for our youth. My own personal experience with Portage was twofold.

First, my son, Joey, due to his struggles with addiction was in the program for 7 months. This gave me back the son I knew existed, caring and loving. Life between us was never better. Six months later I lost him in a vehicle accident. Only those who have experienced the loss of a child could possibly know the devastation.

I want to note the complete support that all the Portage family gave me while I was trying to navigate how to deal with this unspeakable tragedy and how grateful I am to Portage for giving me back my son for that short period of time.

Secondly, I was determined to somehow try to recognize Portage for those few months I had him and also for my own personal well-being. I wanted to make my donation both impactful while spreading the word about Portage and the hope it has to others. I therefore trained to run a marathon at 59 years of age to raise money for Portage. I ran 3 marathons and contributed musically with the help of close friends to raise approximately $140,000.

Thank you Portage for 30 years of making our world a better place through your dedication and caring for our youth and loved ones.

To the youth who are out there in the darkness of addiction: Know there is hope and light with the Portage program.

Try it. It will be the best decision of your life.

- John Maunder, Governor of Portage Atlantic and father of a Portage graduate
