Stories that define our journey
Behind every milestone are the people who made it meaningful. As part of this anniversary, we are proud to present:
30 YEARS. 30 STORIES. 1 MISSION.
This anniversary is, above all, about people.
“30 Years. 30 Stories. 1 Mission.” is a testimonial series that highlights the human impact of Portage Atlantic through the voices of those who have lived it — youth, families, staff, alumni and partners.
Each story reflects a unique journey, but all share a common thread: transformation.
Real voices. Real stories. Real impact.
These stories remind us why Portage Atlantic exists — and why its mission continues to matter.

A Community That Helps Our Children Thrive
"We have been a part of the Portage Atlantic family for a little over a year.
The staff are nothing short of amazing! They build a community where our children can thrive, see their self‑worth, develop life skills, pursue their education, practice self‑reflection in groups, and learn respect, responsibility, emotional management — and, most of all, acceptance. They give everyone, including family members, the opportunity to become the best version of themselves.
Once you become part of Portage Atlantic, you have relationships, continuity of care when returning to the community, support, resources, and always someone to listen on your darkest days and to celebrate your successes and victories on your brightest days.
I am grateful — both as a mother and as an individual — for everyone involved in making sobriety possible for my child and for teaching us skills as her team.
Congratulations to Portage Atlantic on their 30th anniversary, and thank you for everything you do for the community."
— Amanda, mother of an alumni
A Lifeline When We Needed It Most
I will be forever grateful to Portage Atlantic – Moncton Community Care Program Services for the life-changing support they provided to my son during one of the most difficult periods of our lives. Moncton Community Care: Support That Makes a Difference
Participating in the Moncton Community Care Program, Portage’s outreach program for families, has been one of the most valuable supports our family has found throughout our journey. While online meetings are helpful, there is something incredibly powerful about meeting face to face. Being in the same room creates a deeper level of connection. Conversations feel… Read more »

Portage gave us our son back
After our son overdosed, we knew he needed help – and fast – only we had no idea how to get it. We felt like we were flailing and spiraling all at the same time, so we did what most lost people do: we took to Google. Turns out, we’ve never been so thankful for… Read more »

Portage was my last chance; and I had gone through a lot of chances
I arrived at Portage as an altered and damaged version of myself, filled with anger and continuous reckless behavior. During the year leading up to my admission date, my world seemed to be crumbling around me. I blamed everyone but myself and dove deeper into my addiction. When it was first suggested I should go… Read more »
All it takes is an open mind and one foot in the door
Before Portage, jail was a looming threat: possession with intent to traffic, driving under the influence, and possession of methamphetamine. I had no intention of going to therapy until I learned I was under investigation for trafficking. What appeared to be the biggest mistake of my young adult life transformed into the best decision I… Read more »
It’s the first place I’ve ever felt like I truly belonged.
Portage gave me my voice back Growing up I was around drugs a lot. One of my brothers started using when I was 6 years old. He didn’t know how else to cope, I watched his lifestyle destroy him and my family. He got arrested when I was 12 and he now has a life… Read more »
