Reporting to the President and CEO, the Director of Communications and Public Affairs is responsible for the planning, development, and implementation of Portage’s internal and external communication strategies. The person holding the position ensures the consistency of the brand image, the organization’s reach, and its credibility with its clientele, partners, funders, interest groups, government, media, and the general public.
They manage public and media relations, public affairs, as well as the strategic positioning of the organization as a leader in the rehabilitation of addictions to psychoactive substances in Canada. Portage is a key interlocutor with governments and in public debates on addiction treatment, whether it be at conferences, speeches, roundtables, or media interviews. The role of communications is complex, as it requires awareness of a multitude of subjects and imperatives, both in Canada and around the world.
Planning and strategy
Develop and implement a comprehensive communication plan aligned with Portage’s objectives and priorities
Coordinate the development and implementation of regional communication plans
Supervise and develop the communications team by promoting performance, collaboration, and talent progression
Develop the annual budget for the department and ensure its monitoring
Act as a strategic advisor to the general management and the leadership team on communication, reputation, and public positioning issues.
Design and oversee the implementation of national communication policies and standards
Press relations and positioning
Deploy and implement a proactive and reactive media relations strategy and coordinate requests
Prepare and support the designated spokespersons during media interviews or public appearances; Act as a spokesperson with the media, as needed.
Supervise and collaborate on the drafting and dissemination of press releases, media advisories, press kits, key messages, and public stances, etc.
Ensure continuous media, political, and strategic monitoring of issues related to addiction, recovery, and public policies.
Develop and maintain lasting relationships with journalists, influencers, decision-makers, and strategic partners, etc.
Plan and manage crisis communications and sensitive situations, in close collaboration with senior management
Position Portage as a key player and a credible voice in public debates, consultations, relevant events, etc.
Institutional communications and marketing
Ensure the consistency of the brand image and the quality of the content across all platforms (digital, printed, event-based, institutional, advertising, etc.).
Supervise the creation of strategic content highlighting the impact, programs, and recovery stories, while respecting the dignity of individuals.
Collaborate closely with the fundraising teams to support philanthropic activities and strategic partnerships.
Supervise and coordinate the production and distribution of communication tools aimed at various target audiences, including Portage’s clientele.
At least 5 years of experience in a similar position, notably contributing to the development of communication strategies, preparation of press releases, establishment and updating of a network of relationships with the media, design and updating of a website and other communication tools of the organization.
Perfectly bilingual (oral and written)
Excellent knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Windows, Internet Explorer, Outlook)
Knowledge of the workings of the public service, the field of social services, as well as relevant experience in a public environment and in government relations.
