Under sunny skies and surrounded by the peaceful beauty of Cassidy Lake, youth in treatment, Portage staff, and members of Lions District N1 came together last week for another meaningful day at Your Community Garden.

Now in its second year, this community-driven initiative continues to flourish thanks to the dedication of volunteers, donors, and partners who believe in creating opportunities for youth to learn, connect, and grow. More than just a garden, the project has become a space where young people can develop practical skills, experience teamwork, and take pride in contributing to something that will continue to thrive for years to come.

Throughout the day, participants rolled up their sleeves to plant trees and perennials, helping to enhance the beauty of the garden while creating a welcoming outdoor space for future generations of youth. Guests and youth also gathered around picnic tables to paint rocks, adding personal touches of colour, creativity, and meaning throughout the garden.

One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity for connection and gratitude. During the morning gathering, two youth currently in treatment, Justin and Maya, shared heartfelt words of appreciation with the Lions members, thanking them for their ongoing support, generosity, and commitment to the project. Their messages served as a powerful reminder of the positive impact community involvement can have on the recovery journey of young people.

The event also provided an opportunity to recognize those whose contributions continue to help the garden grow. Two new donor leaves were added to the garden signage in honour of the Nackawic Lions Club and Lions members Barb Phillips, Ralph Ervin, and PDG Lion Dave Craft.

Portage would also like to extend its sincere thanks to Scott’s Nursery of Fredericton for its generous in-kind donation of wildflower seed mixes. Some of the seeds were planted in Your Community Garden, while others were shared with volunteers as a small token of appreciation for their support.

As Cassidy Lake celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, it is inspiring to see community partnerships such as this one continue to create meaningful opportunities for engagement, learning, and hope.

Every tree planted, every flower sown, and every shared moment helps this special place — and the people who are part of it — continue to grow.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to another successful year of Your Community Garden.
