On Truth and Reconciliation Day, Portage Atlantic brought residents and staff together to honor the day with meaningful activities to reflect, learn, and heal. The gathering began in the theatre room, where everyone observed a moment of silence to show respect for the history and experiences of Indigenous peoples. Following the silence, a Native prayer was recited by all, creating a collective moment of reflection.
Staff then gave a presentation explaining the significance of Truth and Reconciliation Day, providing a deeper understanding of its meaning and importance. This set the stage for a heartfelt discussion, where both residents and staff shared their personal perspectives on what the day meant to them.
The morning continued with a screening of the documentary Canada’s Dark Secret, which shines a light on the history of Indigenous peoples in Canada, particularly focusing on the residential school system. This powerful film allowed everyone to understand the struggles faced by Indigenous communities.
After lunch, which included a cake to commemorate the day, the group gathered once more for the afternoon session. They were joined via Zoom by an Indigenous Elder who shared his own reflections on Truth and Reconciliation Day, offering a powerful and personal perspective. His words resonated with all, emphasizing the ongoing journey of reconciliation and healing.
This day was an important reminder of the importance of acknowledging the past and moving forward together toward a more respectful and inclusive future.
