While conversations about mental health have come a long way over the past few decades, there is still much work ahead. According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, one in five Canadians experiences a mental health problem or illness each year, with youth being particularly vulnerable. In Canada, 1.25 million young people need mental health support. When early issues such as anxiety or depression go unaddressed, they often escalate, leading to harmful coping mechanisms like substance use.
Bell Let's Talk calls for action
Today, on Bell Let's Talk Day, Bell is focusing on supporting youth mental health. This day aims to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and raise funds for initiatives in this field. By specifically targeting young people this year, Bell wants to draw attention to the particular challenges they face and the urgency of acting early to prevent problems from worsening.
Recent studies show that 70% of mental health challenges begin during adolescence, yet many young people wait 6 to 8 years before seeking help. At Portage, we know this delay can worsen the situation and sometimes lead later to substance use problems. The goal of Bell Let's Talk aligns perfectly with our mission: young people need support now, not years later when the challenges have amplified.
Portage's approach
Portage’s programs for adolescents and young adults address the unique challenges faced by today's youth. They stand out through an approach where recovery goes beyond short-term intervention, but considers all aspects of a young person's life to ensure long-term well-being without substance use. This therapeutic approach, which recognizes the close link between mental health and substance use, allows for simultaneous intervention on both fronts.
During their therapy at Portage, youth discover a community that truly understands and supports them in their journey. The programs offer a comprehensive therapeutic approach and practical tools (emotional validation, stress and anxiety management, interpersonal communication, conflict resolution, etc.). Daily support groups allow youth to share experiences with peers who understand their journey, creating lasting bonds. They develop essential skills for their recovery and personal growth while continuing their education.
Creating Lasting Change
The impact of the programs is best reflected in our graduates' journeys. Kaos, who arrived at Portage Atlantic at Cassidy Lake with severe anxiety and substance use issues. Not only did he work on his mental health and the reasons for his substance use, but he regained control of his life. Through therapeutic support and encouragement from his peers, he gained the confidence to complete the program and later became a member of the Portage Atlantic staff team.
Success stories like Kaos’s are not isolated cases – they testify to Portage's commitment to improving mental health and addressing substance use challenges affecting so many young people today.
