On January 24, 2018, Portage Atlantic made a presentation to the members of the Fredericton Golden Club at their weekly meeting.

Carol Tracey, Director of Development, Portage Atlantic provided information on how the Portage Atlantic residential drug addiction rehabilitation centre for youth was established at Cassidy Lake back in 1996, and how it evolved during the years to become the facility that it is today, with a main building, a girls dorm and a boys dorm, the Recovery Trail for outdoor activities and the newly opened Lewis Fitness Centre. Carol informed the group about the Portage rehabilitation program and described some facets of the services: onsite schooling program, family support and aftercare services.

The Portage Atlantic graduate, Jim Longmaid, described the daily routine as a resident and the Portage therapeutic community model in which the residents work together through peer mentoring and positive role modelling at the Cassidy Lake facility. Jim’s words about his dependency, his struggles, and accomplishments to change his life initiated genuine interest and concern from the Club members.

The Fredericton Golden Club continues to provide support and encouragement for the work being done at the Portage Atlantic Cassidy Lake centre.
