On September 16, 2024, at the Café des Amis de la Montagne, Mr. Peter A. Howlett, founding president of Portage, received the Medal of Honor from the National Assembly in recognition of his involvement in the Montreal community.
Mrs. Jennifer Maccarone, Member of Parliament for the Westmount-Saint-Louis riding, happily presented the medal to Mr. Howlett, who was surrounded by his family, colleagues, and friends.
"Peter Howlett is an exceptional man: unanimously, those who have had the chance to work alongside him acknowledge his important role in the development of Montreal, which he has helped transform into a prosperous and inclusive city," expressed the MP during the ceremony.
Mr. Howlett founded Portage in 1973, along with other concerned Montreal citizens, to address the lack of support for individuals struggling with addiction. He led the organization for over 51 years before passing the torch this year and now holds the position of founding president. His contributions to supporting people with addiction issues are undeniable, and his impact on the lives of Quebecers is certain.
Peter Howlett was also the Co-Founder of “Les Amis de la Montagne” and served as President for many years. Under his leadership, the organization received the City of Montreal's Honor Award for heritage and environmental preservation. He was also deeply involved with Concordia University, serving on the Board of Governors and as Vice-President of the Concordia Foundation.
This recognition from the National Assembly highlights his life's work, dedicated to the common good of the community
