On April 1st, adolescents and young adults from the Portage program at the Lac Écho residential centre took part in a memorable activity that energized both their mind and body.

That morning, Mr. Éric Lécuyer, Director of the RNA Biology Research Unit at the Clinical Research Institute of Montreal (IRCM), introduced our young residents to the fascinating world of microorganisms by collecting samples from the Portage site grounds.

After watching a short video exploring various scientific concepts, Mr. Lécuyer and his team guided the young participants in observing these organisms’ astonishing diversity and behaviours, using microscopes specially designed for that purpose.

Following a much-enjoyed pizza break, a bioinformatics student from Université de Montréal—and karate instructor—led the group in a dynamic karate session. It was the perfect outlet for their energy, while also teaching the values of discipline, fair play and respect for others. The activity was met with great enthusiasm.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Mr. Lécuyer and his two colleagues: Maroua Ait El Baz, a bioinformatics intern and Elissya Lécuyer, Senior Copywriter at Ubiweb, for this enriching experience we hope to repeat in the years to come.
