On July 8, Portage welcomed 33 education professionals to its Lac Écho facility for a tour and presentation of its Adolescent and Young Adult Program (14 to 21 years old).
Organized in collaboration with the Lester B. Pearson School Board, the visit brought together vice principals representing every high school within the board's territory. Portage was also honoured to welcome Director General Cindy Finn and Regional Director Kathleen O'Reilly, whose leadership and collaboration helped make this initiative possible. We extend a special thank you to Ms. O'Reilly for coordinating this valuable partnership opportunity with Portage.
Participants had the opportunity to learn more about Portage's therapeutic community model and the specialized supports available to young people experiencing substance use challenges.
The day also provided an opportunity to present the services available to adolescents and their families, while discussing referral pathways and the resources available to support youth who may benefit from specialized care.
Discussions highlighted the importance of collaboration between schools and addiction treatment services. Schools are often among the first places where challenges are identified and can play an important role in helping young people and their families connect with appropriate support.
By strengthening relationships between the education sector and specialized service providers, initiatives such as this help build a stronger network of care for youth and families across the West Island. They also reflect a shared commitment to improving access to services and supporting student well-being.
Portage would like to thank the Lester B. Pearson School Board and all participants for their engagement, interest, and dedication to supporting young people in our communities. Together, we are building stronger partnerships that will make a meaningful difference in the lives of youth and their families.
