Pregnant women and mothers with substance abuse problems along with their young children.
The Mother and Child Program generally lasts from 6 to 8 months, depending on the needs of the individual.
The Mother and Child Program is provided at no cost to Quebec residents and their children. Portage’s Mother and Child program has been made possible through the collaboration and the contributions of the Fondation Lucie et André Chagnon and the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux du Québec.
The program is located in Montreal. The phone number is 514 935-3152
The Mother and Child Program is provided in French and in English.
Admission is voluntary.
The mother can call the centre to schedule an appointment, during which the Admission Officer will assess her eligibility and help her establish a plan to prepare herself and organise important details before starting her treatment at the Mother and Child centre. Following this meeting, the mother will come to the centre for a one-day visit, where she will be paired up with another resident to get a feel for what the program is like. She will participate in therapy groups, take a tour of the facility with the Admissions Officer, and meet the nurse.
Once she has been admitted to the program, the mother must expect a delay of 10 to 14 days before her child can join her at the Mother and Child centre.
Please contact Portage for more information.
No. Referrals to the program can be made by the clients themselves, their families or guardians, social service agencies, hospitals, community resources, courts, schools, and other treatment providers.
After the resident has been at Portage for at least four weeks, family members can come to the centre for their first 6 hour visit. Following this initial visit, residents can leave the centre with their family every three weeks for 12 hour and 48 hour periods, first accompanied by a more senior resident, and then on their own. The family visit schedule is subject to change, at the discretion of the resident’s caseworker.
There are fewer restrictions for the children. Grandparents and fathers who wish to take a child out of the centre for a visit must simply notify the centre’s administration 24 hours in advance.
