Between normal adolescent experimentation, peer pressure, academic stress and social media influences, parents often wonder when they should be concerned about substance use.<\/p>\n<p>Substance use among young people can&#8217;t be characterized simply in terms of what&#8217;s &#8220;normal&#8221; as opposed to what&#8217;s &#8220;problematic&#8221;. There are a range of substance use behaviours, from experimenting with a substance only once to engaging in regular use that becomes central to a person&#8217;s life: this is known as the substance use trajectory.<\/p>\n<p>This article will help parents:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Understand why adolescents use drugs or alcohol<\/li>\n<li>Determine where their teen is in the substance use trajectory<\/li>\n<li>Recognize the warning signs<\/li>\n<li>Intervene without harming their relationship with their teen<\/li>\n<li>Know when to ask for help<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Key Statistics on Substance Use Among Adolescents<\/h3>\n<p>Statistics show that experimenting with substances is relatively frequent among adolescents, but that only a minority engage in problematic substance use.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/statistique.quebec.ca\/fr\/document\/enquete-quebecoise-tabac-alcool-drogue-jeu-eleves-secondaire-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Enqu\u00eate qu\u00e9b\u00e9coise sur le tabac, l&#8217;alcool, la drogue et le jeu chez les \u00e9l\u00e8ves du secondaire (ETADJES)<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Approximately 80% of young Quebeckers had their first drink before they turned 17<\/li>\n<li>Approximately 37% of them tried drugs while in secondary school<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, only a fraction of adolescents reported engaging in excessive or repeated substance use.<\/p>\n<p>In Canada, hospital statistics indicate that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newswire.ca\/news-releases\/cannabis-and-alcohol-responsible-for-majority-of-hospitalizations-for-substance-use-among-youth-804195831.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nearly 70% of hospital stays for harm caused by substance use among youth involved care for a concurrent mental health condition.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>These figures highlight an important fact: substance use among adolescents is often associated with broader mental health or well-being issues.<\/p>\n\t<p><strong>What the research shows<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/iud.quebec\/fr\/amelioration-des-pratiques\/transfert-de-connaissances\/dossiers-thematiques\/dependances-et-jeunesse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Addiction studies show<\/a> that several factors can influence substance use among adolescents:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Personality traits such as impulsiveness or sensation-seeking<\/li>\n<li>Emotional issues such as anxiety or depression<\/li>\n<li>Social factors such as friends or social exclusion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some studies have also shown that adolescents with behavioural or emotional disorders are at greater risk of early alcohol, tobacco or cannabis use.<\/p>\n\t<h3>Understanding the substance use trajectory<\/h3>\n<p>Not all adolescents who experiment with drugs or alcohol will go on to develop a substance use problem. Most will probably never go beyond the experimentation stage.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, substance use can evolve, as outlined below:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Experimentation: <\/strong>trying out a substance once, usually out of curiosity or in a social context.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Occasional use: <\/strong>intermittent use, usually among friends, with no significant impact on the adolescent&#8217;s daily life.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Emerging substance use problem: <\/strong>substance use that becomes more frequent and may impact the adolescent&#8217;s school life, mood and relationships.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Established substance use problem: <\/strong>substance use that becomes a focus of the adolescent&#8217;s life and may have significant impacts: social isolation, family conflicts, mental health problems and problems at school.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Signs of abusive substance use<\/h3>\n<p>One sign is not enough to conclude that your adolescent has a substance use problem, but you want to pay close attention to <a href=\"https:\/\/portage.ca\/en\/10-warning-signs-that-your-adolescent-may-be-abusing-drugs\/\">persistent changes in an adolescent&#8217;s behaviour or actions<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/portage.ca\/fr\/10-indices-qui-suggerent-que-votre-adolescent-consomme-de-la-drogue\/\">\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Changes in behaviour<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increased irritability<\/li>\n<li>Social isolation<\/li>\n<li>Loss of interest in usual activities<\/li>\n<li>Falling grades<\/li>\n<li>Excessive secretiveness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Physical signs<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Red eyes<\/li>\n<li>Persistent fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Changes in appetite or sleep patterns<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Material signs<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Substance use paraphernalia<\/li>\n<li>Money that goes missing<\/li>\n<li>Objects that get lost or sold<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t<p><strong>What the research says<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/iud.quebec\/fr\/amelioration-des-pratiques\/transfert-de-connaissances\/dossiers-thematiques\/dependances-et-jeunesse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to several studies<\/a>, adolescents with substance use problems commonly exhibit:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increased symptoms of anxiety or depression<\/li>\n<li>Increased impulsiveness<\/li>\n<li>Problems managing their emotions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Substance use can, therefore, be an attempt to regulate emotions rather than a recreational activity.<\/p>\n\t<h3>Risk factors and protective factors<\/h3>\n<p>Research shows certain factors can increase or reduce the risk of developing a substance use problem.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Risk factors<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Early onset of substance use<\/li>\n<li>Impulsiveness or sensation-seeking<\/li>\n<li>Emotional difficulties or mental health disorders<\/li>\n<li>Family conflict<\/li>\n<li>Exposure to substance use in one&#8217;s social or family circle<\/li>\n<li>Social isolation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Protective factors<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Trusting relationships with parents<\/li>\n<li>Clear, consistent guidance<\/li>\n<li>Sports, community or cultural activities<\/li>\n<li>Self-esteem and sense of belonging<\/li>\n<li>Presence of significant adults in the adolescent&#8217;s life<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Protective factors play a major role: sharing a strong bond with a parent is one of the best preventative factors.<\/p>\n<h3>How to intervene without harming your relationship<\/h3>\n<p>Fear or punishment-based approaches have shown limited success. Adolescents are usually more responsive to approaches that combine listening, guidance and information.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A simple 3-step intervention method for parents <\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> Ensure your teen&#8217;s immediate safety<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Priority: avoid risky situations (driving under the influence, mixing different substances, intoxication, using substances when alone).<\/li>\n<li>In the event of immediate danger, contact: <a href=\"http:\/\/sq.gouv.qc.ca\/en\/contact-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emergency services <\/a>\/ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quebec.ca\/en\/health\/finding-a-resource\/info-sante-811\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Info-Sant\u00e9 811 <\/a>\u00a0\/ <a href=\"https:\/\/infopoison.ca\/centre\/centre-anti-poison-du-quebec\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0poison center<\/a> as applicable in Quebec.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong> Protect your relationship with your teen<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Speak calmly, once everyone is ready to talk. Don&#8217;t start a conversation while the adolescent is still under the influence of drugs or alcohol.<\/li>\n<li>Describe what you&#8217;ve noticed, without going into attack mode: &#8220;I&#8217;ve noticed X&#8230;and I&#8217;m worried&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Ask open questions: &#8220;What do you get out of using drugs or alcohol?&#8221; &#8220;When do you need it the most?&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong> Respond proportionately<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>One-time use: clarify your home values, discuss risks, reinforce protective factors.<\/li>\n<li>Established use: enforce boundaries by reiterating that certain behaviours are not acceptable, ask for an outside assessment.<\/li>\n<li>If your teen is not willing to stop taking drugs or alcohol: strive to reduce the risks until he is ready to accept help.
