On Sunday October 14, 2012, over a hundred Portage residents and staff members got together for a mental health awareness walk through the streets of downtown Montr\u00e9al, organised by several local mental health organisations and presided over by Ms. Margaret Trudeau.<\/p>\n
Residents and staff members from Portage Beaconsfield<\/a>, Portage Pr\u00e9vost<\/a>, and from Portage\u2019s Mother and Child centre<\/a> teamed up with residents and staff members from the Portage Program for Mentally Ill Chemical Abusers<\/a> (MICA), in support of the MICA Program. Many of the residents had never before participated in such a demonstration and they were very proud to be helping to shed light on the prevalence of mental health issues in order to reduce the stigma associated with them.<\/p>\n Portage\u2019s Program for Mentally Ill Chemical Abusers (MICA) is a residential program for adults suffering from both mental illness (primarily schizophrenia) and substance abuse. The therapeutic program treats the two disorders as well as their interaction.
