{"id":42803,"date":"2025-04-24T10:04:32","date_gmt":"2025-04-24T15:04:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portage.ca\/?p=42803"},"modified":"2025-04-24T10:17:20","modified_gmt":"2025-04-24T15:17:20","slug":"microscopic-world-and-karate-a-day-full-of-discoveries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/portage.ca\/en\/microscopic-world-and-karate-a-day-full-of-discoveries\/","title":{"rendered":"Microscopic World and Karate: A Day Full of Discoveries"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t<p class=\"lead\">On April 1<sup>st<\/sup>, adolescents and young adults from the Portage program at the Lac \u00c9cho residential centre took part in a memorable activity that energized both their mind and body.<\/p>\n<p>That morning, Mr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/eric-lecuyer-0624b0235\/\">\u00c9ric L\u00e9cuyer<\/a>, Director of the RNA Biology Research Unit at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ircm.qc.ca\/en\/ircm-home\">Clinical Research Institute of Montreal (IRCM)<\/a>, introduced our young residents to the fascinating world of microorganisms by collecting samples from the Portage site grounds.<\/p>\n<p>After watching a short video exploring various scientific concepts, Mr. L\u00e9cuyer and his team guided the young participants in observing these organisms&#8217; astonishing diversity and behaviours, using microscopes specially designed for that purpose.<\/p>\n<p>Following a much-enjoyed pizza break, a bioinformatics student from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umontreal.ca\/en\/\">Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al<\/a>-and karate instructor-led the group in a dynamic karate session. It was the perfect outlet for their energy, while also teaching the values of discipline, fair play and respect for others.
