Portage Quebec - Fete de la reconnaissance 2011

Seventy-six Portage graduates celebrate their victory over substance abuse

On November 6, 2011, Portage honoured the seventy-six people who had completed their substance abuse rehabilitation programs in the past year at the Portage centres in Québec City and in Saint-Malachie.  The Recognition Ceremony, which was held at the Grand Théâtre, in Québec City, also recognised those who had completed Portage’s Employment Reintegration Program.  The graduates celebrated their success with family and friends, Portage staff members, and other friends of Portage.

There were many touching moments throughout the ceremony, including a testimonial by a graduate of the external treatment program for adults, by a graduate of the Employment Reintegration Program, and one by the mother of a graduate of the Saint-Malachie program for adolescents.

“At Portage, we learned to confront our fears, identify the emotions and feelings that caused them, and find ways to overcome the difficulties that have held us back for so long,” said one graduate. “The Portage family has shown us how we can recreate ourselves into to the people we want to be, all the while preparing us to face the challenges of daily life.”

Portage highlights Addiction Awareness Week

Portage Quebec - Declaration Assemblee nationale 2011As part of Addiction Awareness Week, which took place in Québec from November 20 to 26, 2011, Portage stressed the importance of substance abuse treatment and prevention to the media and to Québec’s elected officials. It also publicised a study, conducted free of charge by SECOR, which outlined the significant savings which could be achieved by the government of Québec through substance abuse prevention and treatment.

Participants and graduates helped Portage relay the message to the media, by talking about their experiences with drugs and about how Portage has helped them take back control of their lives.  Click on the link below to listen to Raphaël’s interview, a former Portage Saint-Malachie resident (in French): « Maurais inspiration: ex-toxicomane à 18 ans ».

Two elected officials marked Addiction Awareness Week by making statements before the House of Commons and the National Assembly, congratulating Portage on its contribution to the well-being of society.

New government funding to improve social reintegration services

Portage is pleased to announce that it has received new funding from the Chaudière-Appalaches and Montréal Agences de santé et services sociaux, through the Canada-Québec agreement on the Drug Treatment Funding Program (DTFP), for its different centres in Québec.

With this funding, Portage intends to further develop its social reintegration services for participants under the age of thirty, once they have left the residential programs.  Programming and services will help participants to consolidate the skills they developed while in residential therapy at Portage, to prevent relapses, and to fully reintegrate back into their community and the workforce, or back to school. Portage also hopes to be able to develop an online therapeutic community-based aftercare follow-up service.

Portage hiver

“Once you make the decision that drugs are no longer the solution for managing the ups and downs of everyday life – yes the ups as well as the downs, because happiness is sometimes just as hard to manage as sadness – you have to re-evaluate your social surroundings and cut the negative ties that you had, at one point, thought were your security. We have learned to choose honesty over manipulation, truth over lies, and self-respect over running away.” – A graduate at the 2011 Portage Québec City Recognition Ceremony
