With grace and humility, Father John helps instill hope in the youth at Portage

Portage Ontario Father John 2For nearly twenty years, Father John has been volunteering with the youth in rehabilitation treatment at Portage Elora.  Known affectionately at the centre as FJ, Father John believes that it is his job to seek out what is remarkable about each of the youth in treatment, and help them to see the beauty and strength within themselves.  At 82 years of age, he is a vibrant and magnetic force in the community; and youth and staff members alike are very grateful for his support and reassurance.

Portage Ontario testimonial

“I had always tried to have hope for my daughter, even in the darkest moments, but truthfully, I was holding together by a thread.  When she finally decided to go to Portage I was so relieved to know she’d at least be safe for a little while.  After six weeks into the program, she was still being extremely difficult and resistant to the help being offered, to the point that she risked being discharged from the program.  I was devastated!  I didn’t know what her future held if that were to happen. However, just two short weeks after that she began to progress leaps and bounds.  All the dreams I had for my daughter as a small child can once again be a reality!  You’ve given her a brighter future!” – Eva, mother of a Portage Elora resident
