Graduating despite an addiction
Some West Island teenagers with addiction problems have turned their lives around, they were students of the Portage Program and on Monday night they graduated.
Luna del Buey was the valedictorian at her high school graduation, but it wasn’t an ordinary school.
“Luckily for us, those dark times that brought us here, the light is at the end of the tunnel,” said del Buey.
Del Buey, 17, has battled substance abuse since she was 13, and says joining the West Island Portage Program eight months ago helped her stay sober.
“When I was on drugs I didn’t have any aspiration to do anything. I like to read, I like to write now, I play guitar,” said the recovering addict.
The Portage Program helps teens battle drug and alcohol addiction. School is mandatory while the addicted youth clean up and learn to put their lives back together.
