Lewis Fitness Centre - Portage Atlantic

Cassidy Lake, New Brunswick, April 26, 2016 – Portage Atlantic, a residential drug addiction rehabilitation centre for youth, was proud to welcome representatives of the Lewis Fitness Centre Capital Campaign Committee to the project’s official Sod Turning Ceremony today at the centre at Cassidy Lake, New Brunswick.

At Portage, youth in treatment are encouraged to participate in daily recreational and physical activities as a way to help improve their social, emotional, and physical well-being. These activities enhance the treatment process, as they help youth to focus and be more receptive to Portage’s therapeutic techniques. The Lewis Fitness Centre will be a new venue for these activities.

“The Lewis Fitness Centre goes well beyond bricks and mortar for the youth in treatment,” said Dr. Frank Wilson today at the ceremony, a close friend of the Late Dr. Bill Lewis, whose initial generous donation kick-started the Lewis Fitness Centre Capital Campaign in 2014. “It will be a place to re-awaken their interest in physical fitness; getting them to engage in regular physical activity, all the while improving their focus in treatment and school. This new permanent structure will benefit countless youth for many years to come.”

Hon. Victor Boudreau, Minister of Health and Minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation was on-hand to announce a $450,000 contribution to the Lewis Fitness Centre project. “This investment in the Lewis Fitness Centre project will assist youth in treatment to participate in daily recreational and physical activities as a way to help improve their social, emotional and physical well-being.”

Construction of the fitness centre is scheduled to start immediately. The centre will include a gymnasium and a fully equipped exercise room.

20 years of helping Atlantic youth take back control of their lives
Portage Atlantic is very proud to announce commencement of construction of the Lewis Fitness Centre in the same year that the organisation is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Since the doors of the Cassidy Lake treatment centre were opened in 1996, nearly 2,000 youth with serious drug addiction have come to Portage Atlantic with the goal of turning their lives around.

Many have had a complicated background of trauma, family dysfunction, and chaos – which in many cases are contributing factors to substance abuse and mental health problems. Portage Atlantic seeks to help this vulnerable group of young people overcome their dependencies and develop a healthy, happy, and productive lifestyle.

Since 1996, the 165 acre site itself has undergone a significant transformation, with the construction of new buildings completed in 2010 to respond to the growing demand, and the creation of the therapeutic Recovery Trail in 2013. The construction of the Lewis Fitness Centre is yet another exciting advancement for Portage Atlantic’s rehabilitation centre.

At the heart of it all, are the young men and women working to overcome drug addiction and take back control of their lives; an accomplishment that takes incredible courage and determination.
