Portage shares its substance abuse rehabilitation model with the Wapan rehabiliation centre for Québec First Nations communities

Portage is pleased to announce that it is in the final stages of establishing a multi-year agreement with the Wapan Rehabilitation Centre for Québec First Nations, whereby Portage will help Wapan adopt the Portage Therapeutic Community Model and adapt it to their clients’ particular substance abuse treatment needs.

“We are proud to have the opportunity to make a contribution to the development of an effective treatment model for the autochtone community, and particularly Wapan,” said Peter Vamos, Executive Director of Portage.  “We are confident that Wapan will become a highly successful treatment program.”

Portage’s Mentally Ill Chemical Abusers Program celebrates its 15th anniversary at its annual open house

Portage QC News - MICA Open HouseOn May 6th, Portage’s Mentally Ill Chemical Abusers (MICA) centre will be welcoming partners and representatives from hospitals and centres that work with this clientele to its annual Open House event, which takes place during National Mental Health Week.  Now in its fourth year, the event will also mark the fifteenth anniversary of the opening of the MICA centre.

“We are very proud of what our program has been able to do for our residents over the years,” says Antonio Maturo, director of the MICA Program. “After fifteen years of service, we have helped more than 200 people with mental health issues to overcome their substance abuse problems and reintegrate into society as active and productive citizens.”

New programs at Portage’s Day Centre and Employment Reintegration Centre in Québec City

The 14th edition of the Montréal Portage Open Golf Tournament will be held on June 13th at the Club de golf Laval sur le Lac, and the 17th edition of the Québec City Portage Open Golf Tournament will be held on June 6th.

If you would like to participate in either of these tournaments, please contact Colette Taylor, Portage’s Senior Director of Development, at 514 939 0202, ext. 123, or at ctaylor@portage.ca.  Places are limited and tournaments sell out several months in advance, so don’t delay!

MICA Program’s 15th Anniversary
On May 6th, Portage’s Mentally Ill Chemical Abusers (MICA) Program and the entire Portage community will be celebrating the MICA Program’s 15th anniversary with partners and members of the Montréal community during the centre’s Open House event.

Creating awareness among adolescent residents about safe sex and about homosexuality
At the beginning of March, an organisation called GRIS Montréal visited the adolescents at the Portage centre in Prévost, near lac Écho, to create more awareness about the challenges faced by homosexual people.

The Montréal Fundraising Campaign is well underway

The Portage Foundation is pleased to report that the Montréal region’s fundraising campaign is right on track.  Thanks to the tireless efforts of the Montréal Campaign Committee and the generosity of our donors, the campaign has already made it to 95% of its goal.  With such encouraging results so far, and the support from a dynamic team, the Portage Foundation is confident that we will reach our goal and the campaign will conclude successfully on May 31st.

An excellent start for the Rebuilding Lives Campaign

The Rebuilding Lives Campaign, with the goal of raising $3 million over three years for the Portage centres in the Québec City region, is currently under way.  Under the honorary presidency of Mr. Serge Godin, founder of CGI and Executive Chairperson of the Board, and the presidency of Mr.  Michel Dallaire, President and CEO of Cominar Real Estate Investment Trust and Mr. Mario Cusson, Executive Vice President of La Capitale Insurance and Financial Services, a team of dedicated volunteers are committed to the success of this campaign.

On March 1st, Portage’s Québec City Campaign Committee members visited to the new Saint-Malachie residential centre for adolescents. They were pleased to see the progress of the renovation and construction work, which is transforming the drug rehabilitation centre to be better equipped to serve the increasing demand of young people seeking to rebuild their lives at Portage.

Portage QC Bulletin_Lac EchoFebruary 14th, the anniversary of the opening of Portage’s first substance abuse rehabilitation centre in Prévost, Québec, is known as Metamorphosis Day at Portage.  It is a day for all members of the Portage community to celebrate the transformation that the residents undergo during their rehabilitation treatment.

NEWSBITES Portage Saint-Malachie residents get involved in the nature that surrounds them
Three adolescents at the Portage rehabilitation centre in Saint-Malachie will be participating in a project to help seed and grow Atlantic salmon in the picturesque Etchemin River, which passes right next to the Portage centre grounds in the Bellechasse region of Québec.  To do this, the three residents became part of the Etchemin River Safeguarding Group on February 25th.
