A new home

Portage’s Adolescent Program, which has been located in Saint-Damien-de-Buckland since 1999, has now moved to Saint-Malachie, Québec.  Residents and staff began settling in last November.

The Portage Foundation acquired the 14-acre site, located on a beautiful mountainside by a salmon river.  Current residents enjoy many outdoor activities on-site and potential residents who visit the centre are very enthusiastic about the prospect of undergoing their therapy in such a welcoming environment.  The positive atmosphere of the new site is an important component of the therapeutic process at Saint-Malachie.

The relocation was a major undertaking for all involved.  Special thanks to the centre’s director, Serge Comeau, and his staff members.

Portage’s Fundraising Campaign

Portage’s 2009-2010 Fundraising Campaign is now well on its way under the honourary presidency of Mr. Alban D’Amours, Past President and Chief Executive Officer of Desjardins Group for the Montréal campaign, and by Mr. René Rouleau, Chairman of the Board and CEO at La Capitale Financial Group in Québec City for the Québec City campaign.

Portage would like to thank all of our Campaign Cabinet members for their commitment and support.

EVENTS
2009 Tribute Event
Last fall, Portage hosted its sixth annual benefit evening to raise money for the Portage Foundation.  Each year, the event honours a noted business leader who has shown tremendous commitment to the community.   Last fall, the honour was bestowed upon former Domtar President and CEO, Raymond Royer.

Held under the honourary presidency of Transcontinental President and CEO, François Olivier, the evening raised the extraordinary sum of $475,000 for the Portage Foundation. Among the 550 guests in attendance, Portage was proud to welcome Premier Jean Charest and his wife, Mrs. Michèle Dionne.

Dominic, a graduate of Portage, is an active member of the Resident’s Committee, regularly attending support groups to share his experiences with new residents.  “Giving back to Portage is the best way for me to express how grateful I am to this organisation.  Portage is my second home.”

Honouring our Most Valued Partners

Private sector contributions are an essential source of support for Portage. These donations ensure the viability of our organisation and strengthen our ties to the community.  On October 7th, Portage honoured its loyal partners, who have supported the organisation from the very beginning:

• Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux du Québec
• Amalgame
• Desjardins Group
• Fondation Marcelle et Jean Coutu
• Fondation Lucie et André Chagnon
• IBM Canada Ltd.
• Hydro Québec
• The EJLB Foundation
• Bell
• Microsoft

In recognition of their support, plaques have been created in their honour and now hang in various Portage centres.  Recognition walls have also been installed in the entrance of Portage’s Montreal Head Office and at the Day Centre in Québec City.

It was also an evening to acknowledge Mrs. Dorothy Reitman, cofounder of Portage and active member of the community. Mrs. Reitman was the first woman to be elected President of the Canadian Jewish Congress in 2007 and was recognised for her work by the YMCA in 2008. She remains very involved with Portage as a member of the Board of Directors and member of the Montreal campaign committee.

Celebrating the accomplishments of Portage graduates

Portage QC bulletin_Ceremonie de Reconnaissance2.jpgPortage’s highly anticipated Recognition Celebrations were held in Québec City and in Montréal last fall. The ceremonies celebrated the achievements of both the individuals who had successfully completed the residential phase of the Portage program along with former graduates who have managed to maintain a positive lifestyle for one year.

In Québec City, Portage paid tribute to 70 graduates under the honourary presidency of Mr. Jean Drolet, MP for Jean Lesage. In Montréal, 150 graduates were honoured in front of their families and the Portage community.  They received their diplomas from Mrs. Lise Thériault, Minister for Social Services.

For Portage graduates, the Recognition Ceremony is an important milestone in their journey, which they can share with their family and friends who supported them throughout the process.

“Today, I am proud of the distance I have travelled. I will continue to take this one step at a time, and I know I will reach the top.”
– Isabelle, 33, received her certificate at the 2009 Recognition Ceremony in Québec City.
