Jesse’s story of overcoming his addiction issues at Portage Elora
“When I was drunk I would try anything,” says Jesse of his torturous years of drug addiction. At the tender age of 11, he took his first sip of alcohol, succumbing to a heady feeling of peer pressure from his own babysitter. By the time he was 13, he was spiraling down a vortex of addiction to MDMA, cocaine, and anything else he could get his hands on.
Portage Ontario mourns the loss of Father John, a dedicated volunteer and inspiration to the youth
For nearly twenty years, Father John Burke was a vibrant and magnetic force in the Portage Elora community, volunteering his time to help the youth in rehabilitation treatment. Known affectionately at the centre as FJ, Father John provided guidance and reassurance to residents and staff members alike, seeking out what was remarkable about each of the youth to help them to see the beauty and strength within themselves.
