Portage Ontario - Recognition Celebration 2012

Youth recognised for overcoming addiction issues

On Sunday, April 22, 2012 thirty young people from across Ontario were recognised for having worked through and overcome their substance abuse issues at Portage’s residential rehabilitation centre in Elora. This Recognition Celebration was a day filled with emotions as the graduates, along with their families, peers, and caseworkers came together to celebrate Freedom from Addiction and the positive lifestyle that these youth have been leading in their communities since leaving the program.

“Drugs brought out the demons in my life. I ignored the people who cared about me, rejecting their love and support,” explained David, a Portage Elora graduate. “At Portage, I learned how to take control of my life and to work for what is most important to me: family and a successful future. Now I want to use my experience to help others. I will be starting college in September to become a Social Worker.”

Portage Ontario - Testimonial

“The staff members were supportive and I learned to trust them. I learned to respect myself more and learned many coping mechanisms to overcome my addiction and to distance myself from negative friends.  Thanks to Portage, I learned to use my stubbornness in a positive way to push myself. I am here today to tell you that I survived.”
– Julie, Portage Ontario graduate

Julie’s story of overcoming addiction

As a result of her parent’s addiction issues, Julie was moved to foster care when she was only two years old.  She grew up with her foster parents and many foster brothers and sisters, sheltered from drugs.  She was very active in school until she went to high school, where she fell in with the wrong crowd. “I started experimenting with drugs in Grade 9 and got in trouble with the law.  I got my first youth charge for assault.”
