23 youth take part in Outward Bound Canada winter expeditions

This winter, Portage Elora residents participated in three different Outward Bound Canada winter expeditions. A once in a lifetime opportunity, a total of 23 youth took part in the 5-day long dogsledding and snowshoeing trips in Algonquin Provincial Park.

“It was an enlightening component to my recovery. I found strength which I didn’t think I had, and a love for nature in all seasons. Outward Bound was a surreal, numinous experience that I will remember forever!”
– Jackson

Portage at Queen’s Park

On March 11th, Jennifer Blunt, Director, Corporate Affairs & Development, spent the day at Queen’s Park meeting with several MPPs and talking with them about Portage’s program.

This day of meetings is part of Portage Ontario’s government relations efforts to increase awareness of the need for expanded services at Portage. Over the past few months, Portage has met with the Minister of Labour, Mr. Kevin Flynn, and the Minister of Education, Mrs. Liz Sandals.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to meet with key stakeholders and decision makers of the Ontario Government.

Portage closes in Keremeos, BC

It was with deep felt regret that Portage closed the doors to its centre in Keremeos B.C. on March 5th. Since its opening in 2009, the centre helped almost 400 youth turn their lives around.

Sadly, Portage Keremeos is no longer available to help hundreds of other B.C. youth and families who also need to find new hope and healing. Despite years of well-intentioned negotiations and best efforts by both Portage and B.C. authorities funding and challenges remained insurmountable.

Portage would like to thank all the people and the community supporters who trusted Portage B.C. over the past years.

Elora

30th Anniversary of Elora this summer

This summer, Portage will be celebrating a milestone anniversary; its 30th year in Elora!

That’s three decades of helping youth gain freedom from addiction and getting their life back on track.

A special anniversary will take place this summer and kicks off a busy year for Portage Elora, as new projects are in the air.

Stay informed with the upcoming special activities on our website.

Portage Youth in the Community

Volunteers are not paid – not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless.
– Sherry Anderson.

Thanks to funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, volunteer work has become an essential part of the program at Portage Ontario. Through volunteering, youth gain access to supplementary learning and recreational activities that enrich their experience at Portage. Ultimately, volunteering helps residents identify and cultivate new hobbies and interests while giving back to the community.

Residents are selected to join the Volunteer Program based on the level of therapy completed, their personal interests, and commitment to the cause/activity. Currently, youth are volunteering with the following organizations:

PORTAGE CANADA

Portage Atlantic
