$135,000 raised to give Ontario youth a Fresh Start

Portage Ontario Fresh Start DaisiesOn October 22, 2013, two hundred guests gathered in Toronto for the seventh annual Fresh Start Dinner and Auction, in support of the Portage Ontario Youth Treatment Fund. The proceeds of the event will provide the opportunity for an extra twelve Ontario youth to overcome their substance abuse issues this year at the Portage Elora residential drug rehabilitation centre.

Portage Ontario celebrates Addiction Recovery Awareness Month at Recovery Day

Portage Ontario Recovery DayJoining health and addiction rehabilitation organisations across the country, Portage celebrated Canada’s second annual Recovery Day on September 8, 2013.  Portage Ontario staff members and graduates attended Recovery Day rallies in Ottawa and Toronto, and one of the graduates, invited up on stage by the mayor of Ottawa, spoke proudly to the crowd about his journey from addiction to recovery.  He was enthusiastically applauded for his eight months and two weeks of sobriety, and stated that without Portage, he may not have made it.

Portage Ontario Testimonial 2At the Portage Ontario Fresh Start event this fall, Daniel bravely stood in front of two hundred strangers to tell them about the traumas of his past that lead to his drug problems and criminal convictions.  He explained how, while in treatment at Portage, he learned to better understand himself, so that he could work on healing the deep wounds that he had been carrying for years.

Martha is helping Portage residents paint a brighter future for themselves

Portage Ontario - MarthaArt therapy is among the many programs offered at Portage Academy, where specialised and dedicated instructors like art teacher Martha Bahula are inspiring residents to renew their interest in their studies.  In art therapy classes, practical projects teaching basic drawing, painting, and sculpting skills are challenging students to expand their horizons and express themselves creatively. According to Martha, “it is through the process of artistic thinking that a very therapeutic environment gradually flourishes, especially when it is facilitated with perseverance, patience, and music.”
