Portage Atlantic - Let your soul shine

“I’ll be engaging with people, and encouraging passion and integrity,” says Tim, Portage Atlantic’s new Senior Mentor. “I was so lucky to have people who were invested in my development here. I began to appreciate what’s done here and I realised it’s fundamentally what I want to be doing.”

Funding for the Senior Mentor Program

Portage Atlantic - MP Rob MooreOn March 20, 2012, Fundy Royal MP Rob Moore visited Cassidy Lake to announce new funding for a Portage Atlantic graduate to participate in the Senior Mentor Program.  The Senior Mentor Program is a social reintegration initiative in which Portage graduates obtain valuable work experience that helps them to transition back into the workforce or back to their studies as confident, skilled, and productive members of society.

Through the program, youth who have completed their rehabilitation therapy at Portage are employed as mentors for new residents at Cassidy Lake during a 26-week period. Working 40 hours a week, they assist new residents with their adjustment into the residential therapeutic community and help them make the most of their treatment.

Spring Break at Cassidy Lake

Like the rest of their peers, the youth at Cassidy Lake enjoyed a Spring Break week off from school at Portage Academy, during which they enjoyed structured activities and workshops.  The girls’ community celebrated International Women’s Day with a meditation session and a spa experience, as well as a discussion about how women are portrayed in the media. The boys’ community enjoyed an improv theatre session. Both communities did a workshop on empathy and played outdoor sports.

Cassidy Lake residents expand their horizons at a Skills Work! for Women networking dinner

On March 29, 2012, the girls’ community attended a “Skills Work! for Women” networking dinner in Sussex.  These events, put on by the Government of New Brunswick, are designed to introduce young women in high school, who are interested in the skilled trades and technologies, to female mentors who are currently working or studying in a related career field.  The Portage residents enjoyed meeting the mentors and listening to their presentations on the rewards and challenges of different career paths.  Many of them left feeling very inspired by the guidance they had received, and are now looking into new career options that they had never before considered.

The Continuing Care Program

Portage’s therapeutic community has evolved over the years, from its original approach based on the Daytop model and adapted to the reality of the regions where Portage provides services, to a modern-day approach that has been enriched to continuously incorporate best practices in addiction treatment. As Portage’s model has evolved, so has its success indicators. In 2009, Portage established the Continuing Care Program to encourage the success of its participants. Whereas in the past, a client who left Portage without completing all five phases of rehabilitation treatment was considered to have failed the program, with the Continuing Care Program, Portage can now continue to support these people and encourage them to persist on their path to sobriety.
