Portage Atlantic Recognition Ceremony 2012

Forty-three Atlantic youth recognised for overcoming addiction at Portage

On Sunday, September 30, 2012, Portage Atlantic hosted its annual Recognition Ceremony, celebrating the youth who have completed the residential phase of their drug rehabilitation treatment program this year as well as those who have maintained a positive lifestyle since doing so last year.  This year’s ceremony, proudly supported by the RBC Children’s Mental Health Project, featured guest speaker Dan Martell, a successful Moncton-born entrepreneur who, as a youth, struggled with drug abuse and criminal activity before turning his life around at Portage.

Portage celebrates National Addictions Awareness Week 2012

Portage Atlantic - Cassidy LakePart of Portage Atlantic’s mission is to create more awareness that there are viable and effective treatment options to address the overwhelming social problem of youth substance abuse.  This year, during National Addictions Awareness Week from November 19 to 25, Portage will be focusing on the growing trend of prescription drug abuse, which has been taking a devastating toll on many young lives. If you work at a school or a community organisation and would like to have Portage speak to a group of people about the Portage substance abuse rehabilitation program, or if you would like to come visit the centre at Cassidy Lake during National Addictions Awareness Week, please contact Carol Tracey (contact information below on the right).

Portage’s upcoming 40th anniversary
The Portage organisation is looking forward to celebrating its forty years of existence this winter.  All Portage centres across Canada will look back over the past forty years of history since the first centre was opened in Québec in 1973, to celebrate how the organisation has grown and evolved over the years, as well as the tens of thousands of people that it has helped to overcome addiction and become productive members of society.

“I almost died,” said Andrew, a Portage graduate who was celebrating his one year anniversary free from drugs at this years’ Recognition Ceremony.  Before Portage, Andrew suffered a life of intravenous cocaine use and underage prostitution. “That’s what inspired me to change – you face death and you think ‘I’m not going to make it’…but I did, even though the doctors said I wouldn’t make it to 18. I’m alive.”

Portage gets its very own fitness centre

Portage Atlantic is pleased to announce that the brand new Lewis Fitness Centre will soon be built at Cassidy Lake, thanks to a very generous donation from the late Dr. William Lewis of Nova Scotia.  It’s no secret that physical activity can help improve physical health, mental health, and academic performance, and this new addition to the 64-bed drug rehabilitation centre at Cassidy Lake will be a welcomed enhancement to the recreational programming provided to the residents.
