Once they have completed their addiction rehabilitation program at Portage’s Mother and Child centre, the mothers and their children are given the opportunity to live in affordable supervised apartments at Portage’s Habitations Communautaires.
A reading club was created for all the children aged 2 to 8 in the building: les tout petits lecteurs for those under 4, and les petits lecteurs for the 4 to 8 year olds.
This summer, les petits lecteurs went back to the daycare at the Mother and Child centre to read some stories to the children whose mothers are currently in treatment.
The club recently adopted a Croque-Livre, a book sharing box for children, based on the “Take a book, leave a book” concept. The box was installed in the school yard of an elementary school that three of the club members attend. The children are very proud of the project.
