Earlier this summer, nine members of the accounting team at Portage’s head office in Montréal boarded the train to Québec City on their way to visit Portage’s substance abuse rehabilitation centre for youth in Saint-Malachie. It was the first time that these staff members had visited the centre, and an important opportunity for them to connect the work they do every day with the young people in treatment who are working to overcome their addiction issues and turn their lives around.
While meeting with the residents, they explained how the accounting department works, and all that needs to be done behind the scenes in order for the many centres across Canada to function. The residents were engaged in the conversation, and some expressed an interest in pursuing a career in accounting after they completed their rehabilitation treatment.
Together with the centre’s director, Bruce Ferguson, and the director of community relations, Serge Comeau, the Portage Saint-Malachie community presented each guest with a Certificate of Recognition to thank them for the work they do, which indirectly helps each one of them in their journey towards sobriety.
“We were warmly welcomed by our colleagues at the centre in Saint-Malachie,” said Nadja Kouicem, from the Accounting Department. “Bruce and Serge gave us a great overview of the different programs and activities for the residents. They do incredible work every day with those youth! We were very touched by how the residents and staff members formally recognised the importance of the work that we do every day behind the scenes.”
