About Portage

11-25-2012

On Sunday October 14, 2012, over a hundred Portage residents and staff members got together for a mental health awareness walk through the streets of downtown Montréal, organised by several local mental health organisations and presided over by Ms. Margaret Trudeau.

Residents and staff members from Portage Beaconsfield, Portage Prévost, and from Portage’s Mother and Child centre teamed up with residents and staff members from the Portage Program for Mentally Ill Chemical Abusers (MICA), in support of the MICA Program. Many of the residents had never before participated in such a demonstration and they were very proud to be helping to shed light on the prevalence of mental health issues in order to reduce the stigma associated with them.

Portage’s Program for Mentally Ill Chemical Abusers (MICA) is a residential program for adults suffering from both mental illness (primarily schizophrenia) and substance abuse. The therapeutic program treats the two disorders as well as their interaction. Since it was established in Montréal in 1995, it has helped hundreds of people overcome their substance abuse problems and regain control of their lives.
