On Sunday October 24, 2010, more than 150 Portage residents and staff members got together to walk five kilometers through the streets of downtown Montréal during Montréal Walks for Mental Health 2010, organised by several local mental health organisations and presided over by Ms. Margaret Trudeau and Mr. Guy Latraverse.
Portage’s President, Mr. Peter A. Howlett, Executive Director, Mr. Peter Vamos, the residents and staff members from Portage West Island, Portage Prévost near lac Écho, and from Portage’s Mother and Child centre teamed up with residents and staff members from the Portage Program for Mentally Ill Chemical Abusers (MICA), in support of the MICA Program. In the crowd of 800 people, the large group from Portage was very visible, holding white and blue balloons and wearing Portage t-shirts.
Portage’s Program for Mentally Ill Chemical Abusers (MICA) is a long-term residential program for adults suffering from both mental illness (primarily schizophrenia) and substance abuse. The therapeutic program treats the two disorders as well as their interaction. Established in Montréal in 1995, it has helped more than 800 people overcome their substance abuse problems and regain control of their lives.
