Over the past few months, the Portage Prévost staff team has jumped on-board the 0.5.30 challenge, a Government of Québec initiative to encourage people to smoke less, eat better, and be more active every day. The 0.5.30 refers to:
• 0 cigarettes;
• 5 portions of fruits and vegetables each day;
• 30 minutes of exercise a day.
Staff members have been playing badminton on their lunch breaks and have participated in a number of group exercise sessions. Bowls of fruit left in the staff room are frequently refilled. Many staff members are actively trying to quit smoking, and three of them have succeeded.
Staff members guide the therapeutic community, supporting residents as they work through their issues with the help of their peers. Role modelling between peers is an important component of the rehabilitation process in the therapeutic community, as the more senior residents act as models for the newer members. Residents also look up to the staff members as role models, and by embarking on this 0.5.30 healthy lifestyle challenge, they are setting a positive example for the residents in treatment.
