On May 11, 2011, Portage Beaconsfield residents pitched in to raise money for local charities by volunteering their time at the nearby McDonald’s restaurant on McHappy Day. An annual event, McDonald’s donates a percentage of all beverage sales on McHappy Day to the Ronald McDonald House Charities and other select local charities. This is the third McHappy Day that Portage Beaconsfield residents have participated in, working in front of and behind the counter at peak meal times. Many of the residents were shy or nervous about participating, but they all welcomed the work experience, and found that it gave them a lot of positive reinforcement and recognition. Following their shift, each participant was treated to a meal.
George Bolanis, the owner of several McDonald’s restaurants in the West Island of Montréal, has been a generous supporter of Portage Beaconsfield for many years. In addition to choosing Portage as one of the local charities that the McHappy Day proceeds of his restaurants go to, he has also been sponsoring five meals at McDonald’s during the course of the Portage Academy school year for the entire Portage Beaconsfield community for the past eight years.
Portage Beaconsfield is very grateful for his support.
