February 25th, Cassidy Lake welcomed New Brunswick’s Minister of Finance, Hon. Blaine Higgs, and his Executive Assistant, Mr. Bill Oliver.
The Minister attended the boys’ morning meeting, where residents discussed their progress, their feelings, and their challenges and goals for the day. He then met with some of the residents from the girls’ community before having lunch at the centre with Portage Atlantic’s Chairman, Russell H.T. King and the entire Cassidy Lake community.
Minister Higgs was moved by the residents’ testimonials about their struggles with substance abuse and their drive to be rid of their addictions. The visit gave him an important insight into the challenges faced by youth in Atlantic Canada who struggle with substance abuse. He was very impressed by the Portage Program and community, and by the new Cassidy Lake facility.
For youth in rehabilitation treatment at Cassidy Lake, it is important to know that the community stands behind them and supports them in their struggle to find Freedom from Addiction. Portage Atlantic staff members and residents are thankful to Minister Higgs and Mr. Oliver for taking the time to visit Cassidy Lake and for expressing their support directly to the young men and women at the centre who are working to overcome their substance abuse problems and change their lives.
