On September 25th, 2011, Portage Atlantic hosted its fifteenth Annual Recognition Ceremony at Hampton High School in Hampton, New Brunswick. Forty-two youth from across Canada walked across the stage to receive a certificate of completion of the residential component of their substance abuse rehabilitation program at Portage.
Surrounded by family, friends, Portage staff members, and members of the community, it was day full of emotions for the Portage graduates, who expressed their sincere gratitude to all those who helped them on the road to recovery and sobriety.
Educational milestones achieved at Portage Academy are also recognised during this ceremony. This year, Portage graduates were awarded bursaries from the Lions Ron Evans Bursary Program, the Fredericton Golden Club, and from a New Brunswick Foundation who wishes to remain anonymous. Having rediscovered their academic drive at Portage Academy, many of this year’s Portage graduates are now enrolled in post-secondary education.
Portage Atlantic Chairman, Dr. Russell H.T. King, introduced the event’s guest speaker, The Honourable Marie-Claude Blais, New Brunswick Attorney General and Minister of Justice and Consumer Affairs, who addressed the assembly with a special message of hope prior to the presentation of awards and certificates. Having served for a number of years on the Portage Atlantic Regional Board, Ms. Blais is very familiar with the rehabilitation program at Cassidy Lake and the incredible journey that residents take to overcome their substance abuse issues. Having had to step down from the Portage Atlantic Board when she was sworn in as a member of executive council, Ms. Blais was very pleased to be back among the families, staff members, and community members that make up the Portage Atlantic family.
Many of Portage Atlantic’s community supporters were in attendance to celebrate Portage Atlantic’s graduates. For those organisations and individuals who encourage and support the work being done at Cassidy Lake, it is very rewarding to see the success of the rehabilitation program and to meet the graduates and congratulate them personally on their achievements. The Fredericton Golden Club, a Portage Atlantic supporter, expressed their appreciation for the event (click here to read their message).
Congratulations to all Portage Atlantic graduates and their families for this remarkable achievement.
