On February 27, 2012, PEI’s Minister of Health, Doug Currie, spent the morning at the Portage Atlantic drug rehabilitation centre for youth at Cassidy Lake, accompanied by his communications representative, Beth Johnston. They arrived in time to sit in on the boys’ community morning meeting, during which the youth talked about their challenges and accomplishments, and set personal and community objectives for the day. Following the meeting, two residents from PEI gave the guests a guided tour of the facility.
Minister Currie was impressed by the youth that he met at Cassidy Lake and is encouraged by the confidence that Portage has instilled in them that they will be able to overcome their addiction problems. He is currently in the process of evaluating the substance abuse rehabilitation options available in PEI, and has asked that Portage follow up with his office to discuss a partnership between PEI Health and Portage Atlantic.
