On June 10, 2013 seventeen New Brunswick MLA’s descended upon the Portage substance abuse rehabilitation centre for youth at Cassidy Lake for their annual caucus meeting. While there, they met with the young people in treatment and took a tour of the facility.
The MLA’s were particularly struck by their experience sitting in on the residents’ morning meeting, a daily ritual during which each individual has the opportunity to highlight their recent accomplishments and admit to their shortcomings, and ask for support and help from the community. The visitors were moved and impressed by how candid and well-spoken the youth were. They appreciated getting to speak with some of them one-on-one over lunch, to learn about all they have gone through and how bright their futures are now that they are in treatment.
