Thanks to a very generous donation of $7,900 (US) from long-time supporters, the McKesson Foundation, the youth in treatment at Portage Atlantic’s drug addiction rehabilitation centre eagerly welcomed ten new Rocky Mountain bicycles and new helmets from Outdoor Elements in Sussex this spring. They have been enjoying the new bikes on the centre’s Recovery Trail through the woods, as well as during off-site activities.
At Portage, residents are encouraged to participate in daily recreational and physical activities as a way to help improve their social, emotional, and physical well-being. “Physical activity for the youth is something that we encourage on a daily basis. It is worked into the daily schedule and helps the residents build confidence and the feeling of self-worth,” says Tim Durling, Portage Atlantic clinical staff member.
The new bicycles are a welcomed addition to Portage Atlantic’s physical activity programming and will be used by many youth in the years to come.
