For more than nine years, Portage Beaconsfield has had a partnership with John Abbott College, whereby students in the Correctional Intervention Program at John Abbott can do placements at the Portage substance abuse rehabilitation centre for youth.
At the beginning of each school year, a group of John Abbott students visits the centre to get an idea about the how the program works. The students first sit in on a morning meeting, where residents set daily goals for themselves and talk about their challenges and their achievements. They then tour the facility with a resident and participate in a Question and Answer period with a member of the clinical staff team and the program manager.
This mutually beneficial initiative has been proven year after year. The students get a lot out of their experiences at Portage, and Portage is very grateful to have them and to maintain a strong relationship with John Abbott.
