About Portage

The New Brunswick Post-Secondary Education, Training, and Labour Department has implemented a new program at Cassidy Lake, providing the youth in treatment with hands-on training in seven skilled trades.

Though many of the residents had never before considered a career in skilled trades, the experience for most has been overwhelmingly positive, opening their eyes to possible job opportunities to pursue once they complete their drug rehabilitation program. Beyond this, the training has helped boost the participants’ self-confidence and self-esteem, and has provided an opportunity for them to practice the social competencies they have been learning in treatment, such as being reliable and consistent, accepting to be supervised, and knowing how to ask for help.
