What a difference a year — and plenty of love and support — can make in healing the wounds of a troubled teen.

When Sarah arrived at the Portage residential rehabilitation treatment centre in Elora, Ont., early last year, she was broken. She’d been abusing alcohol and drugs for years and they’d taken a toll on her body and soul.

She had come to Portage to conquer her addictions and take back her life. She is among 4,000 youth who have sought treatment at the 52-bed centre for adolescents since it was established in 1985.

As part of her rehabilitation, Sarah joined an Outward Bound wilderness canoe trip in Algonquin Park that helped set her life back on course. It’s one of the camps supported by the Fresh Air Fund.
