Portage Atlantic and the youth seeking treatment at the rehabilitation centre at Cassidy Lake are very appreciative of the generous support received from the community. Here are some highlights of recent community involvement:
Potash Corporation – Representatives from Potash Corporation, a generous supporter of Portage Atlantic, recently visited the Cassidy Lake treatment centre to take a look at the new boardroom furnishings that they had financed with a $16,000 donation to Portage. They also took a tour of the new facility and met with staff members and youth.

United Commercial Travelers – Every year, several members of the United Commercial Travelers (UCT) of Saint John (Jack Kidd Council 755), a longstanding supporter of Portage Atlantic, spend a day at Portage’s Cassidy Lake rehabilitation centre. This year, eight members from the club attended the morning meeting with the residents and had a guided tour of the new buildings. They then had the opportunity to sit with residents and staff members to learn about the programs and services being offered at the treatment centre.
At the end of their visit, the UCT members presented a cheque for $7,500 to Portage Atlantic, to be put towards the Portage Atlantic Recovery Trail Project. The Recovery Trail Project is raising funds to enhance and extend Cassidy Lake’s existing 3.8 km path through the woods, where residents can go walking, running, biking, and snowshoeing to reflect on their journey towards sobriety.

Fredericton Golden Club – On April 30th, during a visit to Cassidy Lake, Fredericton Golden Club members presented “Development Awards” to two youth in residence which applauds them for their positive contribution to the Portage community. These were the first of the Fredericton Golden Club awards which will be given out each month. The residents who are selected will receive a certificate of merit and their names will be inscribed on a brass plate on either the boys’ or the girls’ community trophy. These awards are made possible because Portage Atlantic has been selected as the recipient of the Fredericton Golden Club’s Development Award.
Greater Saint John Community Foundation – The Greater Saint John Community Foundation is a long-standing supporter of Portage. Recently the Foundation held an award dinner for the 2011 grant recipients at the Marco Polo Cruise Terminal. Portage Atlantic, once again, was a proud recipient of their generous funding. The Greater Saint John Community Foundation has provided thirty-five years of community service and $5.4 million in grants to local charities.
Fredericton Community Foundation – Donat Theriault, Director of the Fredericton Community Foundation, recently presented Portage Atlantic with a cheque for $2,500. The Foundation makes yearly donations to local organisations who are striving to make a difference in the Fredericton region. Portage Atlantic is very appreciative of the Foundation’s ongoing support.
