Antonio Maturo, Director of Portage’s Mentally Ill Chemical Abusers (MICA) Program, delivered an address for Friends of Mental Health, an association of families and friends of people with mental illness, on June 15, 2011 in Dorval.
He spoke to the group for two hours about how mental illness and drug addiction can be triggers for one another, and how the MICA program helps people with schizophrenia to overcome their substance abuse issues and reintegrate into society as productive members of the community. He also outlined and described the other drug rehabilitation programs provided by Portage for adolescents, adults, and mothers with young children.
The audience was made up of people who work in the mental health field, people who have mental illnesses, and people who have children or parents with mental health issues. There were many questions and a lively discussion period at the end of the presentation.
