To help youth plan for their education and career, the Portage centre at Cassidy Lake organises activities that promote awareness of various trades. From April 27 to June 12, 2015, Paul French and Pat Hanratty, instructors at the New Brunswick Community College in Saint John, NB, introduced the youth to carpentry and touched on the electrical, plumbing and metals processing trades.
As part of the program, the youth built a set of stairs leading to the parking lot, a flower planter and benches. Some of the youth participating in the program commented: “It was really cool”, “I really enjoyed trades and Paul was a really good teacher”, “It was better than I expected” and “It helped me a lot with woodworking”. The New Brunswick Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour, has been offering this Trades Orientation Program for youth since 2013.
