The goal of the Canada Post Foundation for Mental Health grants is to improve the quality of life for people living with mental illness by raising awareness and by helping organisations that provide mental health services to people in need. People who suffer from substance abuse issues may also suffer from mental health problems, which is why Portage Atlantic was selected as at 2011 grant recipient.
Portage Atlantic has used the Canada Post Foundation grant to hire a second Aftercare and Continuum of Care staff person to work with the youth and their families once they have completed the residential phase of their program, to ensure a successful reintegration into mainstream society. With a second staff person, Portage Atlantic can now increase the number of Aftercare and Family Support meetings offered in Atlantic Canada.
This generous grant will help Portage graduates in their efforts to remain abstinent from drugs so that they may pursue their education, obtain stable employment, develop healthy relationships, and maintain a healthy lifestyle, to become productive and active members of their communities.
