For more than a year now, the children at Portage’s Mother and Child centre have been learning all about music. Their teacher, Karine Michon, a Québec opera singer, has been visiting them once a week at the on-site daycare centre, La Ribambelle. In small groups, Karine provides an introduction to music, teaching them about sounds, rhythm, and pace, and helping them distinguish between a high note, a low note, a sharp note, and a flat note. The classes are adapted specifically for the age range of the group: either from 18 months to three years old or three years to five years old. The reactions from the little ones are fantastic!
Art therapy is a more recent program at the Mother and Child centre, having started just last fall. The weekly classes are lead by Ninat Friedland, an intern at Portage who is doing her master’s in Art Therapy at Concordia University. This program helps facilitate teamwork between mothers and their children. Each mother-child pair is presently preparing a book of drawings as a gift to be given to one another once completed. The residents really enjoy the program and think very highly of Ninat.
