FAQ – Portage’s Adolescent Program

Program for francophone youth from Western Quebec 

1. Who is this program intended for? Expand

The program is for youth aged 14 to 21 from Quebec.

Francophone youth from Eastern Quebec are served by Portage's drug rehabilitation centre in Saint-Malachie.

2. How long is the typical stay at a residential adolescent program? Expand

3 to 6 months. The program’s duration is determined by each individual’s needs, motivation, and readiness for treatment.

3. How much does it cost? Expand

All Portage programs in Quebec are free of charge and are largely funded by the Government of Quebec.

 

4. Where is the program located? Expand

The centre is located in Prevost, near lac Écho, in Quebec's Laurentian Mountains.  The adress is 1790, chemin du lac Écho, Prevost, QC JOR 1TO - Phone number 514 694-9894

5. What languages is the program offered in? Expand

The youth program is bilingual (in English and in French).

6. What is the admission process? Expand

Admission is voluntary. You can either contact Portage or Access Mechanism in your region to schedule an appointment, during which the adolescent’s needs and desire to undertake the rehabilitation process will be evaluated. An appointment at the centre will also give the potential resident a chance to look around and get a better idea about the environment and the services that are offered.

7. Must clients be referred by health professionals? Expand

No. Referrals to the program can be made by the clients themselves, their families or guardians, social service agencies, hospitals, community resources, courts, schools, and other treatment providers.

8. How often will I see my family? Expand

Residents can speak with their family members on the telephone three times a week. After two weeks, a case conference is organised with the family and the resident. After three weeks of therapy, the first family visit occurs on Portage's premises for a six hour period. Once the resident reaches a certain level in their therapy, they can leave the centre for day visits with their family every two weeks, and can eventually spend the weekends with their family, which helps them prepare for social reintegration. The family visit schedule is subject to change, at the discretion of the resident’s caseworker.

Program for anglophone youth in Quebec

1. Who is this program intended for? Expand

The program is for Quebec anglophone youth aged 14 to 18 years. There is also a separate program for francophone youth on site.

2. How long is the typical stay at a residential adolescent program? Expand

The program’s duration is determined by each individual’s needs, motivation, and readiness for treatment; it can be up to six months.

3. How much does it cost? Expand

Thanks to government funding and private donations, Portage is able to provide its rehabilitation services free of charge for residents of the province of Quebec, with only nominal fees to pay.

4. Where is the program located? Expand

The centre is located in Prevost, near lac Écho, in Quebec's Laurentian Mountains.  The adress is 1790, chemin du lac Écho, Prevost, QC J0R 1T0. Phone number is 514 694-9894

The program’s duration is determined by each individual’s needs, motivation, and readiness for treatment; it can be up to six months.

All Portage programs in Quebec are free of charge and are largely funded by the Government of Quebec.

The program is for youth with substance abuse problems aged 14 to 21 living the Maritime Provinces.

2. How long is the typical stay at a residential adolescent program? Expand

The program’s duration is determined by each individual’s needs, motivation, and readiness for treatment; it can be up to six months.

3. How much does it cost? Expand

Thanks to government funding and private donations, Portage is able to provide this rehabilitation service free of charge to New-Brunswick residents, with only nominal fees to pay.

The centre is located on the shores of Cassidy Lake, near Sussex, New Brunswick, in the Norton area.

It is a bilingual program offering services in English and French.

Program for Ontario youth

1. Who is this program intended for? Expand

Portage Elora welcomes young people with substance abuse problems, aged 14 to 18+ from all regions of Ontario in a stable state of mental health.

2. How long is the typical stay at a residential adolescent program? Expand

The program’s duration is determined by each individual’s needs, motivation, and readiness for treatment; it can be up to six months.

3. How much does it cost? Expand

Thanks to government funding and private donations, Portage is able to provide its rehabilitation services free of charge to Ontario residents, with only nominal fees to pay.

Portage Elora is funded in part by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC) through the Waterloo Wellington Local Health Integration Network (WWLHIN), by the Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services (MCYS), several children’s aid societies, and by the Portage Ontario Foundation through the Portage Ontario Youth Treatment Fund.

The MOHLTC provides a limited number of beds (at no cost to residents), as does the Portage Ontario Youth Treatment Fund. At times, there are waiting lists for these beds. Portage is also licensed by the MCYS to provide beds on a fee for service basis to Children’s Aid Societies and to individuals or families who wish to pay for immediate access to treatment. Please contact the admissions office at Portage Elora for the current rate.

Admission to the program is voluntary. An interview is conducted prior to admission, during which the client’s needs and readiness are evaluated. It also gives the potential client a chance to visit the centre to get a better idea about the environment and the services that are offered.

8. How often will I see my family? Expand

After the resident has been at Portage for at least 2 weeks, the first family visit occurs on Portage premises for a 3 hour period. After 30 days in treatment, family members can take the resident offsite for a 6 hour visit. Two weeks after that, requests can be submitted for residents to leave the centre with their family every two weeks for 9 hour periods at first, and then 12 hour periods, until they reach a certain level in their therapy where they can stay with their family members for a 24 hour period. Once they have reached this level, subsequent visit durations increase by 12 hour increments, so the following visit is 36 hours, then 48 hours, etc. The family visit schedule is subject to change, at the discretion of the resident’s caseworker.
